Indermuehle & Co. supports Habitat for Humanity
Houston, Texas – November 7, 2005 – Since its inception in 1987, Houston Habitat for Humanity has built over 450 homes in Houston. Houston Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that builds simple, decent homes for people in need in affordable housing. The affiliate has grown from building one house per year in 1988 to over 50 homes per year in 2004.
Houston Habitat is one of the largest affiliates in the country based on annual home production. In addition to ongoing home construction in partnership with our generous house sponsors and dedicated homebuyers, Houston Habitat\'s history includes several landmark events and construction innovations.
Jimmy Carter Work Project 1998
During the sweltering heat of June 1998, Houston Habitat for Humanity became the first affiliate in the United States to build 100 homes in one week. Thousands of volunteers, sponsors and homebuyers joined forces in neighborhoods throughout Houston to work alongside President and Mrs. Carter. The Jimmy Carter Work Project is an annual event hosted by Habitat for Humanity International in various locations around the world since 1984.
Energy Star Home Builder of the Year
In 1999, Houston Habitat for Humanity was awarded the Energy Start Home Builder of the Year Special Recognition Award. Currently, each Houston Habitat home constructed meets Energy Star standards. Houston Habitat for Humanity has built more Energy Star homes that any other Habitat affiliate in the country and, in 2003, was one of the top 50 Energy Star builders in Texas.
Rebuilding Our Town - Tropical Storm Allison Build Initiative
In an effort to help alleviate the widespread devastation caused by tropical storm Allison, Houston Habitat for Humanity constructed 44 homes in the Wood Glen subdivision, giving priority to applicants who, in summer 2002, were still suffering from the aftermath of city-wide flooding. Volunteers braved summer heat to construct these much needed houses and joined together for a special volunteer appreciation block party in July 2002 to dedicate new homes and congratulate the newest Houston Habitat homeowners.
SuperBUILD XXXVIII
As part of an NFL™ sanctioned event for Super Bowl XXXVIII, Houston Habitat for Humanity volunteers constructed 38 homes in a symbolic 38 days leading up to the ultimate gridiron challenge on February 1, 2004. Over 4,500 volunteers changed the lives of 38 of Houston Habitat's partner families forever and joined the affiliate in celebrating 15 years of building affordable housing at a special Home for the Holidays celebration in the Wood Glen subdivision.
Habitat Building Supply Outlet Opens
In February 2002, Houston Habitat opened the Habitat Building Supply Outlet - an earned income business strategy that provides financial support for Houston Habitat's house building efforts by selling new and gently used building materials, home decor items and more to the public at deeply discounted prices. Thanks to generous donations from businesses and individuals and the hard work of volunteers in the store, the Building Supply Outlet is able to generate needed revenue to offset Houston Habitat expenses and, ultimately, to fund the construction of future Habitat homes.
